Within the world of electronic waste, WEEELABEX is a concept that companies need to take seriously. Do you want to comply with legislation such as the AVG, contribute to the circular economy and safely dispose of your old ICT equipment? Then it is important to know what this certification entails and why it is relevant to your organization. In this blog we answer the most frequently asked questions.
What does WEEELABEX certification entail?
The WEEELABEX certification stands for Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment Label of Excellence. This European standard has been mandatory since 2015 for companies involved in handling waste electronic equipment (WEEE). The goal? To ensure that e-waste is processed in a safe, environmentally friendly and verifiable way. Companies with this certification work according to CENELEC standards, particularly the mandatory standard EN 50625-4. This focuses on everything: from collection and storage to transport, processing and the removal of harmful substances.
The standards are designed to:
- Handle electronic waste correctly and in an environmentally friendly manner.
- Ensure high-quality recycling and reuse of materials.
- To prevent old appliances from disappearing to countries outside Europe without safe disposal.
- Maintain fair competition among processors.
- Protecting people and the environment structurally.
How do you achieve such a certification?
Getting a WEEELABEX certificate doesn't just happen. A company must demonstrably meet strict technical, administrative and organizational requirements. For example, a permit for storage of electronic waste is required, machinery and equipment must be periodically inspected, and staff must be properly trained. The company must also prove that the waste is processed in a safe and efficient manner. This is done through, among other things:
- Regular internal audits.
- Independent external audits.
- Clear records on incoming and outgoing flows.
- Compliance with AVG data processing rules.
So certification looks not only at what happens physically, but also at the processes, records and quality systems within the company.
Types of processing within WEEELABEX
Three types of processing are defined within WEEELABEX:
- Type 1: Manual processing.
This involves human disassembly, with special attention to hazardous materials such as batteries, coolant or mercury-containing components. - Type 2: Machine processing.
Here machines such as shredders and sorting lines are used. Again, hazardous materials are disposed of safely. - Type 3: Specialist processing.
For advanced recycling, for example with complex products such as servers, data centers or medical devices. This type often requires innovative technologies.
Depending on the type of waste and equipment, a certified company chooses the appropriate treatment process.
Why is this certificate important to your business?
As a company, are you having old equipment picked up? Then you want to make sure it's done right. By choosing a WEEELABEX-certified party, you are assured of:
- Secure data destruction in compliance with AVG.
- Responsible handling of harmful substances.
- Maximum reuse of precious resources.
- Meet legal requirements, including environmental obligations.
Companies working with certified parties face less risk of fines or reputational damage. Moreover, being a WEEELABEX partner often gives you an edge in tenders or collaborations where sustainability and compliance are important criteria.
