What determines the value of old circuit boards

The value of circuit boards is determined by the presence of metals and precious metals. In the first place, circuit boards contain mainly copper. About 20% on average. If there are no other precious metals such as gold and silver, we are talking about "low-value" printed circuit boards. These are found, for example, in power supplies, old radios or washing machines. Yield approximately € 1,- / kg.

Printed circuit boards from "smarter" devices such as cell phones, laptops or computers, for example, feature components that contain gold. These can be recognized in particular by the presence of computer chips, processors (small delicate components) and gold-plated connectors that ensure an interference-free connection. Yield € 1,- to 7,- / kg

Sorting is important

The variation in the presence of precious metals is enormous. To make it easier, we divide circuit boards into categories. In addition, we sort clearly identifiable boards from specific devices such as motherboards from computers, video cards or memory cards. In addition to these categories and unambiguous boards, the degree of "robbery" and "contamination" is important. If valuable components have been taken off, this lowers the value. Similarly, if heavy materials such as iron or aluminum are attached, this lowers the value. After all, it changes the ratio of valuable to less valuable components.

Visual assessment and experience

Initially when buying up, only a visual assessment is possible. Based on past experience, a price is then established. A quotation by phone, whatsapp or mail remains an indication until we actually see a batch of PCBs. Only a refiner/melter determines the exact content after softening.
